Tallurutiup Imanga means the waters surrounding Tallurut (Devon Island).
In 1818, John Ross entered Lancaster Sound searching for the Northwest Passage. He saw a mountain range in the distance and believed he was in a bay, so he turned back. It turned out to have been a Fata Morgana, a mirage in the sky, common in the arctic. In 1819, William Parry returned to the sound.
